| Dancing is the loftiest, the most moving, the most beautiful of the arts, because it is no mere translation or abstraction from life; it is life itself. -- Henry Havelock Ellis |

"Drawn to Dance" is a new collaborative book project intended to inspire dancers and dance lovers with words and images. The book project will be developed through a series of shows of the artwork of award-winning artist Laura Higgins Palmer. Individuals may participate by selecting a piece of Palmer's artwork and writing about how it "draws them to dance", or, by contributing an inspirational text which has helped them in the world of dance. Contributions will be compiled and edited for a web-based version, a handmade artist's book and a printed edition of "Drawn to Dance"

Dance brings music to life. Dancing is the most instinctual, the most physical and the most social art form. Careers in dance are full of challenges unknown to many people outside the dance world. "Drawn to Dance" is designed to share this world among ourselves and with the general public. |

Laura Higgins Palmer can often be seen sitting near the front of an auditorium or in a corner of the dance studio actively sketching dancers as they rehearse or take class. Her fluid lines bring motion and drama to each drawing. Some sketches are finished artistic statements in themselves, directly expressing the artistry or emotions of the performers. Other works, including her stunning and colorful oil paintings, are developed into finished works in the artist's Annapolis studio. Through the patient development of a unique technique Palmer has completed thousands of drawings of dancers and musicians. Featured in this show are drawings and paintings from the "Carnevale Romano" inspired by the artist's time in Italy and sculpture inspired by the choreography of Ballet Theatre of Maryland's beloved Eddie Stewart.

| Drawing is the most instinctual and basic visual art. It's how we envision ourselves and our surroundings. Laura Higgins Palmer has created a large body of artwork which has broad appeal and ever wider appreciation. Says Palmer "Dance and music celebrate life. I would most like to publish a book of my drawings to share joy and offer encouragement to others." | ||
